Dedicated in honor of our founder, the Charles Aiken Academy is a group home school
on the campus of the Boys Home of the South. This school is for elementary and
middle grades and is especially structured for educating boys with special needs
– emotional, physical and educational.
The goal of the Charles Aiken Academy is to test a child, determine how he best
learns, and with encouragement, help him catch up to grade level performance.
Discipline problems are viewed as a therapeutic opportunity and the teachers are
trained to respond as therapist. Special resources available in the Charles Aiken
Academy include a complete computer lab with educational software and internet
capabilities, a resource lab for special needs, a reading specialist and additional
classes on social interaction, art, and sports.
Our goal is to phase a child into the local public schools when he is ready for
that environment, and when he may have the opportunity to be placed in a foster/adoptive/family
home. After middle school, education continues at Woodmont High and into technical
schools or college.
